A jewelry name helps you remember a design. A product code helps you describe the version you want to order. At Gemformia, references such as GRL-S925-09 and GRN-G18-09 bring together the jewelry type, the center stone’s origin, the metal and the design number.

This guide explains how to read our jewelry product codes and use them when discussing a custom sample or a production order with our factory in Panyu, Guangzhou.

Why jewelry designs need both names and product codes

A name gives a piece of jewelry a personality. It can suggest a mood, a story or an occasion, making the design easier to remember and talk about. Our sample name Starry Sky, for example, gives the design an identity beyond its materials and measurements.

A product code serves a different purpose. It gives our team and our customers a concise reference for the design and material combination under discussion. That helps with sample identification, internal communication, inventory searches and repeat-order discussions. A memorable name tells the story; a clear code identifies the version.

How to read a Gemformia jewelry product code

Our general reference format is GXY-Z-000. The letters and numbers below explain the fields used in our examples. These are Gemformia product references, rather than a universal jewelry industry coding system.

Gemformia product code fields
Field What it identifies Examples
G The leading prefix used in these Gemformia references G
X Jewelry type R = ring; B = bracelet; N = necklace
Y Origin of the center stone N = natural; L = laboratory-grown
Z Metal and its purity designation G18, G9, S925, S930 or a PT designation, as specified
000 The design number field 09 or 45 in the sample references

For the metal field, G identifies gold, S identifies silver and PT identifies platinum. The accompanying designation distinguishes the material specification: for example, G18 is used for 18K gold and S925 for sterling silver. The final metal requirements are confirmed in the quotation and order specifications.

The letter L describes the center stone’s laboratory-grown origin; it does not identify the gemstone species by itself. Likewise, N means natural origin, but does not by itself tell you whether the stone is a diamond, sapphire or another gemstone. Always state the exact material when requesting a quotation.

Example: reading the Starry Sky ring reference

The supplied Starry Sky sample is a silver ring with a lab-grown zircon center stone. Its reference is GRL-S925-09:

  • R identifies a ring.
  • L identifies a laboratory-grown center stone.
  • S925 identifies the silver specification.
  • 09 identifies the design reference.

When you send this reference to us, include the ring size and any changes you would like to make. A photograph is also useful when comparing versions of the same design.

What changes when you customize the materials?

Suppose you would like to develop the Starry Sky design with a natural diamond center stone and an 18K gold setting. In this example, the reference changes to GRN-G18-09.

The jewelry type and design number remain R and 09. The center-stone field changes from L to N, while the metal field changes from S925 to G18. This identifies the proposed material combination; it does not mean that the photographed silver sample is already made with those materials.

One design reference with two material combinations
Specification Sample version Proposed custom version
Product reference GRL-S925-09 GRN-G18-09
Center stone Lab-grown zircon Natural diamond
Metal S925 silver 18K gold
Design reference 09 09

We review the stone dimensions, setting and construction for the chosen materials before confirming the final proposal. The design reference is a useful starting point, while the agreed specifications define what will be manufactured.

Using a product code to request a custom jewelry quote

Send the product reference or sample photograph, then tell us your preferred center stone, metal, size and quantity. Include your budget and any dimensions you already know. You can begin with one finished custom sample, review it, and discuss a bulk order after approving the sample.

Jewelry product code FAQ

Does the L in a product code mean lab-grown diamond?

No. In these Gemformia references, L indicates that the center stone is laboratory-grown. It does not identify the gemstone species. The Starry Sky sample in this article uses lab-grown zircon; confirm the exact stone material for your order.

What does the design number 09 mean?

It identifies the design reference in these examples. It is not the ring size, gemstone weight, quantity or price.

Can I request a different stone or metal for the same design?

Yes. Send the reference and the changes you want. We review the materials, dimensions, setting and construction before confirming the customized specification and quotation.

Is the product code enough to confirm my order?

No. Use the code as a reference and confirm the center-stone material, metal, dimensions, size, quantity and other agreed details in the written quotation and order specifications.
